The Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) Health Working Group Meeting was held in Gyeongju, hosted by the Korea Disease Control and Prevention Agency and the Ministry of Health and Welfare. The theme of the meeting was “Ensuring Health for All for a Sustainable Tomorrow,” with the primary goals of enhancing health security through digital technology and strengthening international cooperation in responding to health emergencies.
Key Objectives and Discussions
The meeting aimed to develop strategies for addressing health challenges and fostering prosperity for all. About 180 attendees participated, including representatives from 18 countries and members from the private sector, business community, and academic circles. The first day focused on utilizing AI and big data to prepare for pandemics, discussing the importance of regulatory harmonization and collaboration in research and development.

Focus on Aging Populations and Economic Viability
The second day was dedicated to discussing funding resources in light of changes in population structure and strategies to address aging populations and birth rates. A major topic was the economic viability of vaccination and its benefits, which are essential for improving global health resilience.
Policy Discussions on Pandemic Response
On the final day, discussions centered around improving pandemic response capabilities and measures to strengthen national public health institutions. The exchange of health crisis response strategies between nations was also a focal point of these discussions. Minister of Health and Welfare Cho Kyu-hong emphasized that this meeting is a vital opportunity for advancing health in the Asia-Pacific region. As the APEC chair, Korea is dedicated to fulfilling its responsibility in global health initiatives.
Ensuring Health for All and Building a Sustainable Future
A sustainable society’s core component is ensuring everyone has access to healthcare and can lead a healthy life. However, health disparities remain due to factors such as environmental conditions, economic inequality, and unequal access to healthcare services. Governments worldwide and the global community are working on various laws and initiatives to improve health security for all.
The World Health Organization (WHO) stresses the importance of Universal Health Coverage (UHC), asserting that everyone should have access to necessary healthcare without financial hardship. However, many people, especially in low-income countries, often forgo treatment due to the high cost of medical care. Vulnerable groups, including older people, low-income individuals, and those with disabilities, usually face significant barriers to accessing healthcare, exacerbating existing health disparities.

The Impact of Environmental Factors on Health
Environmental factors play a significant role in health disparities. In some regions, necessities such as safe living conditions, clean water, and clean air are not guaranteed. The rise in respiratory and cardiovascular diseases due to climate change and air pollution also threatens public health.
A Prevention-Focused Medical System
Experts advocate for a prevention-focused medical system to help achieve universal health coverage. By emphasizing disease prevention and encouraging early treatment through routine health examinations, increased vaccinations, and enhanced health education, medical costs can be reduced, and overall national health can improve over time.
Health Coverage for a Sustainable Future
Providing comprehensive health coverage for a sustainable future is a medical and societal responsibility. Public policies, environmental protection, and economic stability must harmoniously guarantee a healthy life. Ensuring everyone has access to healthcare and that health systems are prepared for future challenges is essential for a sustainable and healthy tomorrow.
