A study revealed that consuming veggie oils rather than butter might help to increase lifespan.

The results of this study come from the JAMA Internal Medicine.

Recently, as diet has emerged as the “secret to longevity,” interest has been focused on which foods are beneficial for health.

In the case of fats, animal fats from red meat should be replaced with plant-based fats or fish fats, as they increase the risk of cardiovascular and metabolic diseases and several types of cancer, including colorectal cancer.

In addition, it is better to consume unprocessed fats like milk or cream rather than processed fats like butter or margarine.

The researchers analyzed medical and dietary data from over 200,000 adults in three cohort studies conducted between 1990 and 2023 to investigate the impact of butter or vegetable oil consumption on mortality risk.

The standard for butter consumption was defined as adding butter to dishes or meals that use butter and vegetable oils, including olive oil, soybean oil, corn oil, canola oil, and safflower oil.

According to the study results, replacing 10g of butter with vegetable oil in daily fat intake reduced mortality risk by approximately 17%. In this case, the mortality rate due to cancer also decreased by about 17%.

The researchers recommended consuming various “good fats,” stating that unprocessed fats benefit metabolism and long-term health. This includes nuts, avocados, fatty fish, olive oil, and coconut oil.

The researchers explained that these foods are rich in omega-3 fatty acids, which help reduce overall inflammation levels and maintain metabolic health.

Based on these results, they concluded that consuming vegetable oil instead of butter reduces the risk of death.
